About Us

Who We Are

Wellington Country Marketplace is a full service butcher shop that started as Maziarz Meats in 1934. We feature an assortment of fresh Ontario beef, pork, chicken and turkey, plus prepared foods, fresh produce and a robust bakery. We carry Ontario dairy, cheeses, and charcuterie – and local eggs.

Since 1934

Max (Mike) Maziarz opened a butcher shop at his Harris Street home in 1934. He smoked meat and made sausage for the Guelph Farmers’ Market on Saturdays. For 22 years, he and his two sons, Alex and Edward Maziarz, earned a reputation for their quality meats and friendly service. In 1956, when the business had grown, the family bought a farm on the corner of Cassino and Victoria (Guelph). Alex Maziarz is Brenda’s father. When he retired in 1994, Brenda took over the business, building the current facility on Jones Baseline in the early 2000s. She focused on farmers’ markets and continued the fine reputation for quality meats and exceptional service. A family friendly butcher shop.

Brenda and Kevin retired in 2023, trusting the future of Wellington Marketplace in the skilled hands of their head butcher. With over two decades working directly with food and hospitality, Stephen has brought new energy and additional perspectives to every aspect of the shop.

Marketplace Moment

Celebrating the 90th year of business in November 2024, Wellington Country Marketplace continues to provide quality meats and exceptional service at every opportunity. This little country market wouldn’t exist without the loyalty of our customers and has survived with the support of the local community, and we thank you all for this.

Locally Sourced and Community Driven

In addition to offering full service meat and deli counters, we operate a bakery and kitchen, with prepared soups and meals-to-go. The bakery pumps out cookies, cakes, muffins, pies and freshly made desserts. Don’t forget all of the holiday treats.

Locally sourced produce and meat offer a range of benefits that go beyond just supporting local farmers. For starters, the freshness is unbeatable—when food doesn’t have to travel long distances, it’s often harvested at its peak and delivered faster, meaning it retains more flavor and nutrients. Additionally, by buying local, you’re strengthening the local economy by supporting small-scale farms and businesses, which in turn creates jobs and fosters community growth. From an environmental standpoint, sourcing food nearby reduces the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transportation. All in all, locally sourced food is not just a great way to eat well, but also to invest in the local economy and the environment.
